His comprehensive experience encompasses all aspects of —packing, unpacking, installation, de-installation, custom crating, and gallery preparation. Experience Details

Rich is an independent contractor and has worked directly for museums and private collections, providing expert handling and art preparation. He has handled art pieces valued at millions of dollars, as well as pieces valued at hundreds of dollars, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, paper, textiles, and multidimensional pieces. 

Independent Contractor
1998-Present

Provide a full range of museum services to both private and public collections.  Services included registration and condition reports, art preparation, art installation, conservation tech, framing, exhibition design and construction, shipping logistics and insurance, collection inventory and imaging, consignment agreements, and storage management.

Museum Experience Highlights Include:​​

Art Handling & Installation

  • Performed all aspects of art handling, moving, packing, unpacking, installing, and de-installing artwork for major exhibitions and collection rotations.

  • Expertise in handling diverse media, including paintings (oil, pastel, prints, photos), sculptures (bronzes, ceramics), textiles, basketry, furniture, and decorative arts.

  • Transported art locally and performed professional courier trips following Getty/LACMA training standards.

Crating & Fabrication

  • Built custom boxes and crates for outgoing loans and traveling exhibitions.

  • Designed and outfitted crate interiors for the safe transport of paintings and objects.

  • Fabricated pedestals, gallery walls, storage units, bins, shelving, and compactor systems.

  • Created custom mounts for the exhibition and storage of objects.

Conservation & Registration

  • Assisted conservators with conservation treatments, storage improvements, and preservation techniques.

  • Completed condition reports and managed database records (ARGUS, Mimsy systems).

  • Worked with conservators on rebacking paintings, improving hanging systems, and mount making.

  • Completed specialized training in mounting and mount removal for works on paper.

  • Managed registration processes, including collection movements, deaccession projects, and catalog updates.

Major Project Experience

  • Managed large-scale projects, including packing 500+ pieces for traveling exhibitions and 100+ large contemporary works for international transport.

  • Coordinated rehousing projects for specialized collections (Native Arts, photography, decorative arts, oversized works on paper).

  • Contributed to exhibitions featuring 600 Years of British Painting, Treasures from the Louvre, Warhol Icons, Christian Marclay, Toulouse-Lautrec, The Impressionists, and many others.

Experience Highlights Include:​​

  • Managed the move of 400+ painting collection from storage to permanent display.  

  • Consulted and participated in the movement, installation, and packing of 135 selected pieces for the Denver Art Museum Show and subsequent traveling shows.

  • Removed painting collection from and to frames for photography. 

  • Improved frames as necessary: padded the rabbits, added new backing with preservation materials, and added new hanging hardware.

  • Continually responsible for packing and unpacking art, hanging and moving art, and other preparatory tasks.
